From the realism of the nineteenth century to the modern sensibilities of the mid-twentieth century\, these works capture moments of transformation in the American story—shaped by innovation\, shifting ideals\, and expanding global connections. \nHighlights acquired through the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust include masterworks by John Singer Sargent\, Maria Oakey Dewing\, Irving Wiles\, and others\, whose portraits and interiors balance refinement with modern sensibility. A newly installed suite of landscape paintings—from rugged Adirondack scenes to luminous coastal views—features Winslow Homer\, Arthur Wesley Dow\, Carducius Plantagenet Ream\, and others\, tracing how artists reimagined the land as both subject and symbol of American identity. \nElsewhere\, Norman Rockwell’s Framed and vibrant beach scenes by Maurice Prendergast and Edward Potthast explore storytelling\, leisure\, and the rhythms of everyday modern life. A Wunderkammer-style display brings together objects such as a Tiffany vase\, a Leonor Fini perfume bottle\, and a Japanese inrō\, evoking the nineteenth-century fascination with collecting that helped shape museums themselves. Regional voices\, including Walter Biggs and Allen Ingles Palmer\, extend that narrative closer to home\, grounding national stories in the life and artistry of Southwest Virginia. \nA dedicated gallery\, made possible by Roanoke native Peggy Macdowell Thomas\, examines the intertwined legacies of Thomas Eakins\, Susan Macdowell Eakins\, and Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Macdowell Kenton—artists whose family ties and shared realism illuminate the personal networks behind American art’s enduring power. \nTogether\, these works offer a panoramic view of America—its people\, landscapes\, and creative spirit—seen through the eyes of generations who helped define it. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Most known for her semiprecious adorned minaudières\, or compact occasion cases\, her creations also include day bags\, belts\, and pillboxes. \nJudith Leiber (1921-2018) was born Judit Pető and raised in an upper-middle-class Jewish family in Budapest\, Hungary. Inspired by her mother’s handbag collection\, Leiber became the first female member of the Hungarian Handbag Makers Guild and the first female apprentice at Pessl\, Budapest’s most prestigious handbag company. Leiber’s training was cut short by the Nazi occupation of Hungary\, which placed her family under harsh restrictions. They initially survived under Swiss protection but were later forced into a Jewish ghetto\, where they were eventually liberated by the Soviet Red Army. \nIn 1946\, she married Gerson Leiber\, an American soldier stationed in Budapest\, and in 1947 emigrated with him to the United States to make a home in New York City. Leiber emerged as the only female handbag designer in the United States\, eventually founding her own brand\, Judith Leiber Handbags\, in 1963. She eventually sold the company to Time Products in 1993 after revolutionizing the industry by elevating handbags to become works of art. \nLeiber’s minaudières are marvels of craftsmanship. Every piece began with a wax model in her New York factory\, then traveled to Florence\, Italy\, to be pressed into brass forms then plated in gold or silver\, returning to New York for assembly and lining. Finally\, teams of artisans hand-applied up to 13\,000 Swarovski crystals\, a process that could take weeks. Her iconic beading began by accident when an early bag returned with flawed plating. Leiber disguised the flaw with crystals\, establishing what would become her signature innovative style. Over the course of her career Leiber created over 3\,500 designs inspired by every facet of the world around her. \nConsidered one of the largest repositories of Judith Leiber bags in the United States\, the Taubman Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection comprises nearly 120 pieces gifted by regional donors Rosalie K. and Sydney Shaftman\, for whom the gallery is named. This gallery in the museum is dedicated to the permanent display of this collection and is frequently rotated to showcase the limitless range of Leiber’s artistic legacy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Envisioned as a sparkling cavern\, the installation was designed as an homage to architect Randall Stout’s first vision for the gallery\, which would have displayed the minaudières in plexiglass boxes suspended from the ceiling to the floor. The cavern concept is in keeping with Stout’s idea of the second-floor hallway as a riverbed with gallery “caverns” branching from it. \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n	\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n EXHIBITION PREVIEW\n SELECTED WORKS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Judith Peto Leiber (1921-2018)\, Personalized Roanoke Star Clutch\, undated\, Swarovski crystals\, onyx\, gold plate\, Taubman Museum of Art; What began as a regional commitment to art has grown into a collection defined by depth\, continuity\, and evolving perspective. \nThis exhibition reflects both history and momentum. At its core are gifts made in honor of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary — works that expand the Collection across media\, cultures\, and time periods. Installed in dialogue with longstanding holdings\, these new acquisitions illuminate established strengths while opening new areas of inquiry. \nThroughout the galleries\, historical foundations and contemporary voices are interwoven. Photography speaks across generations; regional narratives sit alongside global traditions; established icons are reframed through present-day perspectives. \nA permanent collection is not static. It is built over time\, shaped by community support\, guided by professional standards\, and entrusted to future generations. With these 152 gifts\, this anniversary marks both a milestone and a beginning — honoring the past while setting the course for what comes next. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? To mark this significant occasion\, the Museum has reflected on how best to honor both its rich history and the vibrant Roanoke Valley community it serves. Central to this celebration is the Museum’s iconic architecture\, which embodies the spirit of its surroundings. Designed by the acclaimed architect Randall Stout\, the building itself is a striking tribute to the landscape\, with dynamic lines\, sweeping curves\, and innovative forms that echo the natural beauty of the region. \nMokha Laget was commissioned to reinterpret the Museum’s architecture through her distinctive abstract style\, translating structural forms and spatial dynamics into vibrant\, evocative compositions. The title\, Intersecting Terrains\, engages the geometry of Randall Stout’s design\, while evoking regional geology\, history and abstraction. It gestures conceptually to Laget’s practice: layered terrains across scale\, intersecting forms\, and perceptual systems in motion. The mural invites viewers to experience landscape as interconnected: ecological\, architectural\, historical\, and abstract- rather than separate or static. \nThe mural for the Taubman Museum is conceived as a dialogue between architecture\, landscape\, and abstraction. Drawing from Randall Stout’s masterful design\, its composition mirrors the building’s multi-faceted  geometry while evoking the surrounding layered planes and shifting tonalities of the Blue Ridge. The palette of ochres\, greens\, and silvery blues references the region’s ecology\, while deep black accents allude to the area’s coal mining history. Flowing contours evoke the movement of water\, the lifeblood of the region and a tribute to the ancestral Monacan peoples who first inhabited these lands. Intersecting lines and forms suggest a network of connectivity between natural systems\, human histories\, and architectural space\, expressing how these layers of meaning interweave within my signature language of geometric abstraction. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Born in 1959 in Oran\, Algeria\, she grew up in North Africa\, where the strong light and wide landscapes made a lasting impact on her sense of color and space. She earned her BFA in Fine Arts at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington\, DC\, where she studied under prominent leaders of the Washington Color School. \nOver the years\, Laget has lived and traveled around the world\, working in many fields including curation\, art restoration\, and language translation. These experiences exposed her to different cultures and visual traditions\, all which feed into her art. Since the mid-1990s\, she has lived in New Mexico\, where the desert environment continues to influence her work. \nLaget’s work has been exhibited at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art\, Oklahoma; Knoxville Museum of Art\, Tennessee; Amarillo Museum of Art\, Texas; and Milwaukee Art Museum\, Wisconsin; to name only a few. She has received awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Hammersely Foundation\, among others. \nLaget has created multiple public art projects\, including a commission by Art in Embassies/U.S. Department of State for the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott\, Mauritania; a street painting on 8th Street NW in Washington D.C. commissioned by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, in collaboration with the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Kreeger Museum; and most recently\, a large-scale installation at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, DC. \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n	\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n KEEP EXPLORING\n \n View All Upcoming Exhibitions\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n	\n\n \n	\n \n Jul 02\, 2026 \n\n \n \n – \n \n \n Oct 11\, 2026 \n\n \n \n	\n \n Washington’s Greatest Victory: Yorktown and American Art \n	\n	\n View Exhibit	\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n \n	\n \n Jul 10\, 2026 \n\n \n \n – \n \n \n Jul 11\, 2026 \n\n \n \n	\n \n VMFA on the Road – Virginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness \n	\n	\n View Event	\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n \n	\n \n Jul 16\, 2026 \n\n \n \n – \n \n \n Jan 03\, 2027 \n\n \n \n	\n \n It’s a Party! Because Yorktown was a siege rather than a dramatic battle\, artists have long faced the challenge of how to represent its significance in visual art. Over time\, they turned to portraits\, landscapes\, battle scenes\, and commemorative images to capture the meaning of this pivotal moment. \nOrganized in collaboration with George Washington’s Mount Vernon and presented in celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence\, Washington’s Greatest Victory: Yorktown and American Art explores how artists have interpreted Yorktown and shaped its place in national memory. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? SUMMARY:VMFA on the Road - Virginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Garden Music at the Museum \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nVMFA on the Road presents the exhibition Virginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, curated by Dr. Susan J. Rawles\, VMFA’s Elizabeth Locke Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works of art from its permanent collection\, VMFA organized this exhibition in recognition of VA250\, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Revolutionary War\, and the Independence of the United States. \n\n\n\nVMFA on the Road provides residents of the Commonwealth the opportunity to see and experience authentic works of art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This state-of-the-art experience is an Artmobile for the 21st century. By way of VMFA’s Statewide Partners program\, which includes 1\,000 community centers\, small museums\, colleges\, and universities\, VMFA on the Road brings enriching art experiences to thousands—literally meeting people where they are. \n\n\n\nVirginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness explores the American ideal that was first expressed in the Declaration of Independence. The evocative phrase “Life\, Liberty\, and the pursuit of Happiness” founded a nation on a promise of “inalienable” rights\, a promise that has endured for 250 years. From the collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, 14 works of art—paintings\, prints\, and decorative objects—provide an alternative lens by which to understand our past\, encouraging us to consider the hopes and challenges of those founding principles and their persistent relevance for realizing a “more perfect union.” \n\n\n\nFree and welcoming to all. No registration required; walk-ins encouraged! \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Escher. After exploring how these artists used “empty” space to create their work\, you will apply these concepts through the traditional Japanese design practice of Notan\, using paper-cutting techniques to transform flat paper into dynamic\, high-contrast compositions. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. \n\n\n\nMembers: $16 | General Public: $20 \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Durand\, John Frederick Kensett\, and others. \nEnticing images of fruits\, flowers\, and other delights by Severin Roesen\, John Francis\, Ferdinand Richardt\, Elizabeth Williams\, and Adelaide Coburne Palmer are featured alongside trompe l’oeil examples by William Michael Harnett\, John Haberle\, and John Peto. \nTwentieth-century modernism and realism can be seen in works by artists ranging from Patrick Henry Bruce and Marsden Hartley to Paul Cadmus\, Charmion von Wiegand\, Suzy Frelinghuysen\, Elizabeth Catlett\, and Ernie Barnes. \nThe mission of the Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen Ph.D. Foundation to “carefully research and obtain American masterpieces” is abundantly represented in American Made. \nAmerican Made was curated by Todd Herman\, PhD\, President and CEO of The Mint Museum; Kevin Sharp\, Director of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens; and Jonathan Stuhlman\, PhD\, Senior Curator of American Art at The Mint Museum. \nThis exhibition is on view October 15\, 2026-January 24\, 2027\, with an Opening Celebration on Saturday\, October 10\, and Member Preview Day Sunday\, October 11. \nCheck back soon for exhibition tickets! \nClick here for Opening Celebration tickets! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Their only prompt was\, “What does independence mean to you?”\, and their only requirement was that the work needed to be either a lithograph or serigraph. The artists were free to choose print size and the printers who produced the editions. \nThe Taubman Museum of Art (then the Roanoke Fine Arts Center) was one of two recipients of the portfolio in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was the other recipient. \nThe 12 prints in the portfolio were the first 12 works to be accessioned into the Museum’s Permanent Collection in 1976. \nThe portfolio offers a window onto how these contemporary artists thought about the United States and the idea of independence in the 1970s. \nExhibiting them in 2026\, the Semiquicentennial of the United States\, allows for visitors to consider what has changed or stayed the over the past half century. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? This concordance of celestial events illuminating work that represents these very events creates a unique sensation within the viewer. \nA veritable repository of Eastern art – having lived in and learned ancestral techniques from the East – as well as Western\, Lorenz synthesizes the cultures of the world’s poles like other artists of light such as James Turrell or Hiroshi Sugimoto. \nUnison and harmony thus sit in the deep heart of her art. \nAs does beauty. Contrary to a tendency in contemporary art that mistrusts it\, beauty does not frighten Nancy Lorenz – in fact\, she celebrates it. \nAn alchemist who has made the periodic table of the elements into the matrix of her work\, the artist tirelessly seeks to push further visually\, to go elsewhere by the combination and juxtaposition of the elements. Lorenz adds movement to the equation in this new series. \nThe light veil of Shadow Element (2024) undulates with the movement of air in the painting’s environment. Another new facet is a nocturnal radiance never before present in her work: fluorescence. There is chemistry at work in this piece: drippings of Oxygen\, Silicon\, Argon\, Tungsten\, and Silver propelled onto the veil interact endlessly with a sheet of lead behind them. This work in progress will modify the painting’s appearance for some time\, giving shape to what the artist calls “ghosts.” \nThe artist welcomes accident and chance into the heart of her works of virtuosic mastery. The unexpected is life\, and here it is the life of the painting. One can feel the vitality in Nancy Lorenz’s jubilant gestures – it is communicative. Her sometimes very sensual touch attracts touch\, the gentle caress. \nFrançois Jonquet | October 2024 | Translated from French by Jacob Bromberg \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? The word kimono\, meaning “a thing that is worn\,” refers to many different types of robes\, from ornate silk wedding uchikake to simpler cotton summer yukata. \nWorn in Japan by both women and men for well over a thousand years\, the kimono has often been a canvas for spectacular woven\, dyed\, painted\, printed\, and embroidered designs created by Japan’s finest textile artists. After the mid-nineteenth century\, when Japan opened to foreign diplomacy and trade with the United States and Europe\, the kimono also became beloved in the West: a subject for painters and an inspiration for fashion designers. \nIn recent decades\, the influence of the kimono has reached beyond fashion\, and a number of contemporary artists from around the world are creating kimono-inspired works in such diverse media as paper\, fiber\, metal\, glass\, and ceramics. \nThis exhibition explores the kimono as a traditional Japanese garment; a canvas for spectacular design\, symbolism\, and messaging; and as a muse for the works of ten important contemporary artists: Miya Ando\, Kristine Aono\, CAMY\, Gordon Chandler\, Reiko Fujii\, Karen LaMonte\, Peter Liashkov\, Maria Papatzelou\, Michael F. Rohde\, and Na Omi Shintani. \nThe extraordinary works of painting\, sculpture\, and fiber art of these international artists have all been inspired in fascinating ways by this iconic garment. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving?
