HAVE YOU SEEN The Dark Parrot
Mar 03, 2023 – Jun 04, 2023
In HAVE YOU SEEN The Dark Parrot, Brazilian artist Eva Rocha presents a multimedia installation built off her research of sixteenth-century explorers’ journals and other colonial narratives perpetually impacting Indigenous Peoples and their descendants – and consequently present in the Latinx diaspora.
Through a display of contemporary art appropriating the aesthetic language of artifacts and their consumption via a Eurocentric zoomorphic gaze, HAVE YOU SEEN The Dark Parrot searches to open a dialogue about the historic cannibalization of Indigenous cultures in a parallel, unseen art history.
Eva Rocha is a Brazilian-American multimedia artist. Her personal experiences and cross-disciplinary studies in theater, anthropology, cultural studies, and kinetic imaging in Brazil, Peru, and the United States permeate and inform her interest in the language and embodiment of collective trauma and its archiving into objects. Much of her multimedia work investigates processes of dehumanization and serves a dramatic language that confronts viewers to take part in the work as spectators or agents in a social dialogue. In 2022, The Taubman Museum of Art awarded her first prize and a solo exhibition for her work Silent Chorus in the Homeward Bound Juried Triennial.
