The Debutante (detail), 1986, oil on canvas, Museum purchase, 1994.023
Antoinette Hale
Based in the Roanoke Valley, Antoinette Hale is an artist who spent her working years as a social worker. In her art, she conveys her experience in the Black community attending Debutante Balls during her time with the Altruist Club. As an artist, she drew directly from photographs using the gridding technique. Her paintings’ dark backgrounds enable the contrasted figures in the scenes to be emphasized.
Kindergarten through 5th Grade:
Students will connect with Hale’s subject matter through their own experience going to events such as birthday parties, graduations, and more. Participants will be then given a background from one of Hale’s paintings with minimal elements in it that they will add to, including the type of clothing at their choice of event.
6th Grade through 12th Grade:
When viewing Hale’s work, students will observe Hale’s painting technique that creates a sense of form to her subjects. Then students will receive line drawings of formal wear that they can layer Wonder Stix to apply Hale’s technique to their own work. Older or more advanced students may also use grid and proportion to add figures as well.
Duration: 90 minutes for 2-3 classes/groups; 120 minutes for 4 classes/groups
Cost: $5 per student, required chaperones free (1 per 10 children required), additional chaperones $5

Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1850-1939), Reverie, 1898, color lithograph, Copr Mucha Trust, courtesy of the Mucha Foundation
Eternally New: The Art Nouveau World of Alphonse Mucha
Known as the master of Art Nouveau, Alphose Mucha’s art represents a time in art history when there was a turning point away from historicism; instead focusing on bringing in a new style. Art Nouveau embraces beauty over functionality by incorporating dream-like surroundings filled with intricate organic linework, undulating florals, and earthy colors. Mucha’s work transported viewers in the late 18th century to a world filled with serenity and elegance, showing people what life could be like.
Kindergarten – 5th Grade:
Upon viewing Mucha’s work and discussing what makes Art Nouveau stand out against different forms of art, students will get to apply Art Nouveau’s curved lines and floral characteristics to the subjects of some of our paintings in our permanent collection. Students will get to choose from a few portraits and create a background that is inspired by Art Nouveau.
6th Grade -12th Grade:
After viewing how Art Nouveau has shaped much of today’s art in everything from concert posters, comic books, and logos; students will use modern day pop culture icons and templates to create their own work. Students will use critical thinking to determine what to alter about the modern character to mimic the Art Nouveau art style. The finished product will be a mini poster with their applied Art Nouveau characteristics.
