Imagine
a winter paradise: a glacial palace hewn from
the arctic lifeforce at the end of the earth,
nestled in the arboreal splendor of a Scandinavian
wilderness. An ancient yet ethereal place that
has been long forgotten, it is alight only by
the northern lights, yet pulsing with the life
from a thousand inhabitants. Joined by the spirits
and creatures of the Nordic pantheon, revelers
look to the coming of a new year and the celebration
of a new dawn. Forgotten yet alive, decadent yet
ephemeral, a night like tonight only comes but
once a year, but this belle époque shall
remain …
French for “beautiful era,”
the belle époque was a golden age for Europe
at the turn of the twentieth century, when technology,
culture, artistic achievement, and economies flourished.
Rapid advancement of civilization was coupled
with opulence as boundaries were broken and Europe
began to experience life in new ways.
Presented by Valley Bank and hosted by LeClairRyan,
the Belle Époque Ball will embody
this spirit, as the new Taubman Museum of Art
and thecontemporaries usher in a new golden age
for Southwest Virginia culture. The Ball, the
first of what is to become a fabulous annual New
Year’s Eve event, will showcase the breathtaking
new Museum as a stage for the presentation of
and interaction with art.
The setting of the inaugural Ball is inspired
by the work of two artists: Petah Coyne, one of
whose works is displayed for the first time in
the new building, and Tord Boontje, an internationally-acclaimed
Dutch designer whose work mixes traditional motifs
with modern sensibilities.
With an intimate performance by the one-and-only
Cirque du Soleil, their first performance in Southwest
Virginia and first private performance in all
of Virginia, a luxurious seated dinner, music,
and a special fundraiser presented by Jewells
Fine Jewelry where revelers may purchase a glass
of champagne with the chance of finding a diamond
at the bottom, the Valley Bank Belle Epoque Ball
will be THE place to celebrate thecontemporaries,
the Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke’s renaissance,
and the new year.
Tickets will go on sale Monday, November 17,
2008 to members of thecontemporaries, on Thursday,
November 20, 2008 to members of the Taubman Museum,
and on Monday, November 24, 2008 to the general
public.
